JENNY HALSTEAD

“Journeying from the discipline of medical illustration back in to the freedom of fine art is an exciting process. My work continues to explore drawing, as well as the excitement of the moment. I am fascinated by form and colour and their interaction with light on both landscape and figure, and reflect this in oil, pastel and water-based media.”

Jenny Halstead has had a varied and perhaps somewhat unusual career as an artist. After studying Art and Design at Sutton and Cheam School of Art, she won a Guest Scholarship to the Royal Academy Schools, London while she was training in Medical Art.

She then worked in various London Teaching Hospitals illustrating medicine, surgery and anatomy, before becoming free-lance and working on publications such as Gray’s Anatomy 36th, 37th & 38th editions; she also expanded her illustrative work into scientific and natural history subjects.

Working in partnership with late husband, a palaeontologist, Jenny went on to produce numerous books on dinosaurs, including a series for children. She also worked with him on projects in the USA, West Africa, India and China.

In 2001, Jenny established the Whiteknights Studio Trail, an annual walking tour of Open Studios in the University of Reading area. She held solo exhibitions in Henley and London in 2004 and 2005, has exhibited regularly over the past five years at the Mall Galleries and elsewhere in London, and held joint and group shows in the South East of England.

Jenny currently teaches drawing and painting classes in France, Greece and Spain, and in the Berkshire area, while at the same time working on the progression of her own work.
