THE GREEK ISLAND OF PAXOS: THE PERFECT PLACE TO HONE
YOUR WRITING SKILLS
The Greek island of Paxos is the perfect place to hone
your writing skills and Paxos Life Activities has just
launched an expanded programme of Creative Writing
holiday courses there for Summer 2011.
The Greek island of Paxos is a really beautiful island
that provides the perfect environment for anyone
interested in the creative arts to tap into its peace
and beauty and discover their true potential. It is in
fact hard to imagine a better place to hone ones writing
skills and special interest holiday operator, Paxos Life
Activities, has therefore expanded its range of Creative
Writing holiday courses on Paxos in Summer 2011.
The friendly and informal courses are suitable for all
levels of ability and offer the best of both worlds: the
chance to have a holiday in an idyllic location, while
at the same time doing something very worthwhile in an
environment where there are few distractions.
Accommodation is in shared villas with their own pools
and spacious terraces set in the shade and tranquillity
of the olive groves above the village of Loggos. But for
anyone who already has their own accommodation on Paxos
or who wishes to be more independent, it is also
possible to join just the group tuition sessions.
Although the holidays are not aimed at single
travellers, anyone travelling alone and wishing to spend
their time in the company of a group of like-minded
people would be perfectly at home here. They are equally
suited to couples and larger groups.
‘Writing About Paxos’ (18 – 25 April) offers the
chance to explore the fascinating landscape of Paxos
through creative writing. Spirit of place has always
inspired writers, from Thomas Hardy’s
Dorset to
Lawrence and Gerald Durrell’s Corfu, and Paxos provides
the perfect opportunity to immerse oneself in an
inspirational place and find a rich source for poetry or
prose. The course will be led by Adam Strickson, an
experienced writer, tutor and frequent visitor to Paxos,
who is a Teaching Fellow in Creative Writing at the
University of Leeds.
‘Writing for Children and Young People’
(16 – 23 May)
is an inspiring, challenging, thought-provoking
and fun course for anyone who has ever wanted to write
for children or young people. Whether they tell stories
to their own children and want help getting them down on
the page, or want to develop their skills and turn their
hobby into a career, this course will help them
to get started and develop
their stories ranging from picture books for younger
children to novels for teenagers and young adults.
The course will be led
by Steve Voake, a successful children’s author
whose books have sold all over the world, and who is
currently Senior Lecturer in Writing for Young People at
Bath Spa University and a regular tutor for The Arvon
Foundation.
‘Writing and Selling Features’ (23 - 30 May) is for anyone who has ever wanted to write about
travel, hobbies, people, life experiences, personal or
professional matters and find regular newspaper and
magazine markets for their articles. This course will
teach both complete beginners and the more experienced
all the tricks of the journalist’s trade, including how
to find and develop stories, write and interview like a
pro, and successfully pitch ideas; in fact, all the
know-how needed to get articles into print. It will be
led by Judi Goodwin, a journalist and trainer with wide
experience in both print and broadcast media, who has
been a regular feature writer for national and regional
newspapers, and also a freelance broadcaster for BBC
Radio.
‘Crime Writing’ (19 - 26 September)
covers the initial process and practicalities of writing
a crime novel from taking
the germ of an idea, through to a synopsis and a plan of
the novel to the opening paragraph, chapter one, page
one and beyond ... with lines that will hook the
reader. The
course will
be led by retired police officer and full-time crime
writer,
Nick Oldham, who
has
had
15 crime novels
published
and has recently
been commissioned
to write four more novels in his
highly successful
Henry Christie
series.
‘Unleash Your Writing Power’ (3 - 10 October) is
an inspirational and innovative workshop that will help
writers to inject energy, power and magic into
everything they write, whether it be
articles, stories, family history, marketing or business
communications, or even a best seller. The course will
once again be led by journalist and trainer, Judi
Goodwin.
‘An Introduction to Screenwriting’
(3 - 10 October) will take participants through
the process of writing for the screen in easy stages:
from creating characters and a story-line that will
immediately grab the audience’s attention, right up to
finding a buyer for a finished script. The course will
be led by novelist and playwright, Linda M James,
has had three novels
published: Out Of Shaking Air, The Invisible
Piper and Tempting The Stars, and been
commissioned to write a number of screenplays. She is
also the author of the highly successful How to Write
Great Screenplays: And Get Them Into Production.
