Saturday/Sunday, 18/19 April 2009: Greek Orthodox
Easter:
Easter is the most important holiday of the year in
Greece and Greek Orthodox Easter is being celebrated
this weekend, a week after ‘Western Easter’. On the
Saturday night everyone goes to church and at
midnight the priest announces the resurrection of
Chris (Christos Anesti) and people are allowed to
light their candles. There are then firework
displays in all three main villages on Paxos. Here
are some images of last nights church service and
fireworks in Loggos. Kalo Pascha!

Wednesday, 25 March 2009: Independence Day:
On
25
March 1821 the Greeks raised the Greek flag for the
first time over free Greek land as a declaration of
their independence from the Ottoman Turks. However, the
map of Greece in 1821 was very different from the map of
Greece that we know today and the battle for freedom was
an extremely long one that wasn’t completed until after
World War II. Today there are parades and dancing in
celebration of Independence Day all over Greece,
including Paxos. Unfortunately, the weather wasn’t very
nice but the parade still took place in Gaios as
planned.

Sunday, 1 March
2009: Carnival in Gaios:
Today was the start of the two-day celebration that
precedes the beginning of Lent. A special party with
music was put on in the main square in Gaios for all the
children, who dressed up in fancy dress and took over
the square. Tomorrow we hope to have some pictures from
the celebrations for Clean Monday, the Greek equivalent
of Shrove Tuesday.

Friday, 27 February 2009: Spring
is in the Air:
Today it really does feel as though Spring is in the
air. The birds are all singing and the bees are busy
gathering pollen from the myriad of colourful flowers
that have sprung up in the last few days. And, once
again, the weather is just perfect – sunny and
wonderfully clear.

Monday, 23 February 2009: First Signs of Spring:
Although it’s only a few days since we were in the midst
of Winter storms, already the first signs of Spring are
starting to appear. In the olive groves the ground
beneath the magnificent trees is once again becoming
carpeted with verdure and already the first flowers are
starting to appear.

Friday, 20 February 2009: Beautiful Winter's Day:
At
last the recent wind and rain seems to have come to end,
and today we have a really beautiful sunny day of the
kind we would expect on Paxos during the winter. It’s
bitterly cold and the temperature isn’t expected to get
much above freezing but we have fabulous views across to the
snow-capped mountains on the Greek mainland. It’s a real
beauty and we just can’t imagine anyone wanting to be
anywhere else!

Wednesday, 11 February 2009: New Junior School Opens:
If
you’ve visited Paxos in the last couple of years, you
may have noticed the large buildings being constructed
near the football pitch in Bogdanatika and wondered what
they were going to be. Well they were the new infant and
junior schools which are now finished, and last
Wednesday children from the three junior schools on the
island moved in. It wasn’t a very nice day but even so
they all stood outside for prayers. The infants moved
into their new school a couple of weeks ago and the
senior school has been there for several years. So now
the infant, junior and senior schools are all on the
same site.
